You already own vitamin C, retinol or a glycolic toner. Now there's a blue bottle of GHK-Cu on the shelf — does it play nicely with the rest?
For when and in what order to apply them, see how to use copper peptides.
Quick answer: what goes with copper peptides?
| Active | Same routine as GHK-Cu? | Suggested approach |
|---|---|---|
| Retinol | Usually better in separate routines | Many people prefer to keep retinol and GHK-Cu in separate routines rather than stacking them |
| Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) | No | Don't layer; use copper peptides morning or night, just leave vitamin C out of that routine |
| Vitamin C derivatives | Prefer separate routines | Same rule as a simple precaution: leave them out of your copper peptide routine |
| Niacinamide | Usually fine | Many people use both in the same routine |
| AHAs / BHAs | Usually better in separate routines | Many people prefer one active per routine |
| Sunscreen | Yes (daytime) | Broad-spectrum SPF every morning under SA sun |
Patch-test new products and introduce one at a time. If you use a prescription retinoid or other prescription actives, ask your doctor or dermatologist first.

Copper peptides with retinol
Yes. Many people prefer to use them in the same week, but not in the same routine.
Retinol can cause dryness, redness and peeling at first. Cleveland Clinic advice is to start slowly, often every other day, and add one product at a time (Cleveland Clinic). If you start retinol and a new copper peptide serum at the same time, it can be hard to tell which product caused any sting.
If you use both in the evening, a rotation many people find easy:
- Mon / Wed / Fri / Sun: cleanser → 2% GHK-Cu Copper Peptide Face Serum → cream
- Tue / Thu: cleanser → retinol → cream
- Sat: cleanser → cream only
It's usually better to give each new product about two weeks before adding the next. We suggest steady use of each rather than stacking, and neither erases deep lines overnight.
Copper peptides and vitamin C
Don't layer them together. Use your copper peptide products morning or night, just leave vitamin C out of the routine you use them in.
In solution, copper speeds up the breakdown (oxidation) of vitamin C (Shen et al., 2021).
L-ascorbic acid vs derivatives
- L-ascorbic acid: keep it out of any routine that includes copper peptides. Use copper peptides morning or night, just leave vitamin C out of that routine.
- Derivatives (ascorbyl glucoside, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate and similar): as a simple precaution, we still prefer to leave them out of your copper peptide routine too.
If a routine includes vitamin C, choose a moisturiser without copper peptides for it. Use the GHK-Cu + SNAP-8 Renewal Face Cream morning or night, just leave vitamin C out of that routine. For the colour story, see why our serum is blue.

The 2% GHK-Cu Copper Peptide Face Serum (30ml): morning or night, just leave vitamin C out of that routine.
GHK-Cu and niacinamide
Many people are comfortable using niacinamide in the same routine as copper peptides. This is a practical suggestion, not a chemistry claim: most people find they don't need to split days.
Our 1% GHK-Cu Fragrance-Free Face Cream already combines 1% GHK-Cu (Copper Tripeptide-1) with niacinamide, liquorice extract and Southern African oils such as marula and baobab. Serum first on clean skin, then cream. Full layering order lives in the how-to guide.
Copper peptides with AHA / BHA
Glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids can feel drying or sting when you're new to them. It's usually better to keep them in a separate routine from your copper peptide serum, with one active per routine. That way, if your skin reacts, it's easier to tell which bottle to pause.
Copper peptides and sunscreen (South Africa)
Sunscreen is not optional under South African UV.
CANSA notes that South Africa has some of the highest monitored UV levels in the world, and that UV reaches skin on overcast days and on the daily drive, not only at the beach (CANSA, Be SunSmart). Use broad-spectrum SPF 20–50 (SPF 30–50 if your skin is fair), apply about 20 minutes before going outside, and reapply at least every two hours.
Copper peptides sit happily under sunscreen in a morning routine that does not include vitamin C. If vitamin C is your morning step, use a non-copper moisturiser, then SPF.
Sample AM / PM week
| Morning | Evening | |
|---|---|---|
| Mon / Wed / Fri / Sun | Cleanse → vitamin C (optional) → moisturiser without copper peptides → SPF | Cleanse → 2% GHK-Cu serum → cream |
| Tue / Thu | Same morning | Cleanse → retinol or AHA/BHA → cream |
| Sat | Same morning | Cleanse → cream only (rest) |
This is one example week. You can use copper peptides in the morning instead; just leave vitamin C out of that routine.
Prefer not to juggle bottles? The Copper Peptide Serum + Cream Duo pairs the 2% serum with the Renewal Cream for R1,500. Orders of R1,500 or more get free standard delivery in South Africa (R135 below that). Use the serum and cream morning or night, just leave vitamin C out of the routine you use them in.

What these products won't do
- They won't replace sunscreen.
- They won't change your skin overnight.
- They help soften the look of fine lines and support smoother-looking, comfortable-feeling skin with steady use — not a prescription treatment.
- If you have a skin condition, see a doctor or dermatologist before adding actives.
Frequently asked questions
Can you use copper peptides with retinol?
Yes. Many people prefer separate routines rather than stacking them. Start slowly with retinol and introduce one product at a time.
Can you use copper peptides and vitamin C together?
Don't layer them together. Use your copper peptide products morning or night, just leave vitamin C out of the routine you use them in (Shen et al., 2021).
Can I use GHK-Cu with niacinamide?
Usually, yes. Many people use them in the same routine, and our fragrance-free cream already combines 1% GHK-Cu with niacinamide.
Can I use copper peptides with AHA or BHA?
Yes. It's usually better to use them in separate routines, with one active per routine.
Do I still need sunscreen with copper peptides?
Yes. SA UV is high year-round. Wear broad-spectrum SPF every morning, whether or not your morning routine includes copper peptides (CANSA).
The bottom line
Keep pairings simple. Don't layer vitamin C and copper peptides: use your copper peptide products morning or night, just leave vitamin C out of the routine you use them in. Keep retinol and acids usually in their own routines, use niacinamide when you like, and wear sunscreen every day. For step order, use the how-to guide.
Ready to start? Try the 2% GHK-Cu Serum or the Serum + Cream Duo (R1,500; free standard SA delivery at that threshold).
