You have a little bottle of blue serum on the bathroom shelf, and the questions start. Morning or night? Before or after moisturiser? Can it go on with your vitamin C, and what about the retinol a friend recommended?
Copper peptides are easy to use once you know a few simple rules. This guide is written for South African skin and South African sun. It covers where GHK-Cu fits in a routine, what to keep at a different time of day, and why daily sunscreen matters more here than almost anywhere else.
What are copper peptides?
GHK-Cu is a small peptide (three amino acids: glycine, histidine and lysine) bound to copper. On an ingredient list you'll see it written as Copper Tripeptide-1. GHK is found naturally in human plasma, and researchers first identified it in 1973 (Pickart & Margolina, 2018). The copper gives formulas their blue colour; why is our serum blue? explains how.
The same 2018 review summarises several small 12-week cosmetic studies. In them, GHK-Cu creams were linked to visible improvements in the look of fine lines, sagging and skin clarity (Pickart & Margolina, 2018). Those studies were small and each used its own formula, so read them as a promising signal, not a promise. They do give a sense of timing, though: they ran for weeks, not days.
In short, copper peptides reward consistency. You'll see more from a simple routine you keep up every day than from a complicated one you drop after a fortnight.
Where copper peptides go in your routine
Our serums are light and water-based, so they go on first, straight after cleansing, with your cream on top.

The 2% GHK-Cu Copper Peptide Face Serum (30ml).
Evening routine (the ideal time for GHK-Cu)
- Cleanse. Use a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water, then pat your skin dry.
- Copper peptide serum. Smooth 2–3 drops of the 2% GHK-Cu Copper Peptide Face Serum over your face and neck. These are the directions on the bottle.
- Moisturise. Follow with a cream. The GHK-Cu + SNAP-8 Renewal Face Cream contains GHK-Cu, SNAP-8, shea butter and squalane, with a light "Ocean" fragrance. If you prefer no added fragrance, the 1% GHK-Cu Fragrance-Free Face Cream combines GHK-Cu with niacinamide, liquorice extract and Southern African oils such as marula and baobab.
We suggest the evening for the serum because it keeps copper peptides away from the morning vitamin C step (see below), and sunscreen isn't needed at night.
Morning routine
- Cleanse (or just rinse).
- Vitamin C serum, if you use one. Morning is its spot in this routine.
- Moisturiser. The Renewal Cream's directions allow it morning and evening. Just leave vitamin C out of any routine you use it in, so on vitamin C mornings, choose a moisturiser without copper peptides.
- Sunscreen. Use broad-spectrum SPF every day. This step isn't optional.
The easy option: the Serum + Cream Duo
Prefer not to work out pairings? The Copper Peptide Serum + Cream Duo pairs the 2% GHK-Cu Serum with the Renewal Cream. Use the serum at night and the cream morning or night, just leave vitamin C out of the routine you use it in. The two cost R1,500 together, and orders of R1,500 or more get free standard delivery in South Africa (R135 below that).
What to use at a different time of day
These are practical precautions, and each one comes with its reason.
- Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid). In solution, copper speeds up the oxidation of ascorbic acid (Shen et al., Scientific Reports, 2021). That's why we keep the two apart: vitamin C in the morning, copper peptides at night.
- Retinol. Retinol is known to cause dryness, redness and peeling at first. The usual advice is to start slowly, every other day, and add one product at a time (Cleveland Clinic). We suggest using it on the nights you don't use your copper peptide serum.
- Exfoliating acids (glycolic, lactic, salicylic). Keep these to their own nights as well. With one active per evening, you'll know which product caused it if your skin reacts.
- Prescription products. Follow your doctor's or dermatologist's advice before adding anything new.
A simple weekly rotation
| Evening | What to use |
|---|---|
| Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun | Cleanser → GHK-Cu serum → cream |
| Tue, Thu | Cleanser → retinol or exfoliating acid → cream |
| Sat | Cleanser → cream only (a rest night) |
Introduce one new product at a time and give it about two weeks before adding the next.
Why sunscreen matters even more in South Africa
The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) notes that South Africa has some of the highest monitored UV levels in the world. It also points out that UV reaches your skin on overcast days and on the daily drive, not just at the beach (CANSA, Be SunSmart).
CANSA's guidance is straightforward:
- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 20 to 50, and choose SPF 30 to 50 if your skin is fair.
- Apply it about 20 minutes before you go outside.
- Reapply at least every two hours, and again after swimming, sweating or towel-drying.
- Look for sunscreens with the CANSA Seal of Recognition.
The directions on our creams say the same: if you use them during the day, follow with sunscreen.
How long until you see a difference?
Expect weeks, not days. The GHK-Cu studies mentioned above ran for 12 weeks (Pickart & Margolina, 2018). Take a photo in the same light on day one, keep your routine consistent, and compare after two to three months. Individual results vary.
A few practical tips
- Patch test first. Our labels recommend it. Try a small amount on your inner forearm for a couple of days before using it on your face.
- A little goes a long way. Two to three drops is the amount on the label.
- Store it well. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, as the label says. A bathroom windowsill isn't the place.
- Include your neck. The serum's directions cover the face and neck.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use copper peptides every day?
Our 2% GHK-Cu Serum is designed for once-daily use, preferably at night.
Can I use copper peptides with vitamin C?
Don't layer them together. Copper speeds up the oxidation of L-ascorbic acid in solution, so use vitamin C in the morning and copper peptides at night.
Can I use copper peptides and retinol in the same routine?
Yes. Keep them on alternate nights and introduce one product at a time.
Do copper peptides go before or after moisturiser?
Before. Apply the serum to clean, dry skin, let it absorb, then follow with your cream.
I have sensitive skin. Where should I start?
Patch test first, start once daily, and consider the Fragrance-Free Face Cream, which has no added fragrance or essential oils. Stop using any product that irritates your skin.

The 1% GHK-Cu Fragrance-Free Face Cream (100 g).
Can I use copper peptides while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Please check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting any new skincare product during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Why is my serum blue?
It's the copper in GHK-Cu. Read why our serum is blue for the full explanation.
The bottom line
Copper peptides don't need a complicated routine. Apply your GHK-Cu serum to clean skin in the evening, follow with a cream, keep vitamin C, retinol and acids at other times, and wear sunscreen every day. Give it a few months and judge the results in good light.
Ready to start? The Serum + Cream Duo costs R1,500 for both, with free standard delivery in South Africa.
